Chinese New Year marks the first day of the new year on the traditional Chinese (or lunar) calendar and is the most widely-celebrated holiday in Chinese culture.
Chinese New Year involves a variety of traditional celebrations. From the lighting of fireworks to ward off bad spirits to the gifting of “hong bao” (or red envelopes filled with money) to wish prosperity upon loved ones, there are many aspects of the holiday for all cultures to learn about and take part in! For example, here is one custom anyone can do and get the whole family involved - thoroughly cleaning your home, so as to sweep away ill-fortune and make room for good luck, happiness, wealth, and longevity. Also the Chinese New Year is referred to as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year marks the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season. Typically, celebrations include a family feast that doubles as a reunion dinner, the gifting of “hong bao” or red paper envelopes filled with money, and the lighting of firecrackers. Why Red?? The color red is associated with this holiday due to a mythical belief that bad spirits are afraid of the color red, as well as loud sounds – hence the fireworks. Here’s to an auspicious year ahead! Let's make this year of good fortune, success, and prosperity! 5 Elements Coaching LLC © 2015-2021 All Rights Reserved.
