Common Calming Herbs:

Lavender has been shown as beneficial for a person's overall mood, anxiety, and sleep.

Passionflower boosts GABA levels in the brain, which promotes relaxation. Passionflower has been shown to ease generalized anxiety with fewer side effects than prescribed sedatives.

Valerian root promotes a calming effect similar to passionflower. This herb is commonly used as a sleep aid which increases the amount of GABA in the brain.

Ginger is an aromatic herb that has long been used in traditional healing systems as a natural remedy for anxiety. The presence of Gingerol, an antioxidant, helps to counteract the harmful chemicals that our body produces when we are stressed. Stress can sometimes lead to an upset stomach since the production of stomach acids crucial for digestion gets hampered.

Chamomile has been used for centuries for its calming effect.  Recent studies have shown that chamomile is not only a relaxing herb but it also helps to reduce anxiety. Much of chamomile’s relaxing qualities are due to phenolics such as flavonoids, quinones, phenolic acids, and other antioxidant compounds present within the plant. It also helps to reduce stress related
loss of appetite and headaches.

Disclaimer: While these herbs are generally safe and well-tolerated, it’s important to do your research. Furthermore, don’t use herbs as a replacement for any medications, and don’t combine with other medications. Herbs have side effects just like medications, so always check with a health professional before beginning a home or natural remedy, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, and with children. Use an alcohol-free version if alcohol is a concern.
