Studies have found that eating can affect our moods, and the reverse is true. You may have felt this effect yourself. When feeling down or overly stressed, we often reach for sweet, salty, or fatty foods or what some may call comfort foods.
In the short term, they might make us feel a little better due to the award release of chemicals known as dopamine. However, in the long run, an eating pattern that limits other foods over time can make us depressed, anxious, and irritable due to blood sugar crashes and inadequate nutrient intakes like vitamin D or healthy fats. Research studies have found that people with depression can improve their mood by making thoughtful diet additions like eating more fruits, vegetables, fish, and legumes. These foods can help improve one's mood.
Furthermore, a lack of essential nutrients has been found to contribute to poor mental health status. Remember: this is about addition, not restriction. Folks struggling with difficult emotions or emotional eating and things like depression and/or anxiety are also at higher risk for disordered eating and eating disorders or substance use disorders. We must remember that food is influenced by our childhoods, traumas, relationships, and emotions because they all go hand in hand and can define our views on food.
